French drains and yard drainage in Dalton

An open French drain trench across a backyard, lined with black filter fabric and partly filled with gravel, with perforated pipe in the trench

A French drain is a buried, gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects water from a wet area and carries it somewhere it can leave. It is the usual fix when regrading alone cannot move the water, and installed drains often run $10 to $35 a foot.

A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe inside, wrapped in fabric so soil doesn't clog it. Water soaks into the gravel, runs along the pipe and leaves at a low spot or the street. Without a downhill outlet it just fills up, so the outlet is the first thing to plan.

When does a yard need a French drain?

When water collects in a spot the ground cannot easily be reshaped to drain: a yard that sits lower than the neighbor's, the uphill side of a house cut into a slope, a soggy strip between two houses, or water seeping out of a hillside after rain.

If the problem is simply ground sloping toward the house, start with grading. A drain is the tool when the water needs a pipe to get out.

How does a French drain work?

Water soaks through the soil into a trench of washed gravel. At the bottom, a perforated pipe picks it up and carries it downhill. Filter fabric around the gravel keeps fine soil from clogging the stone and pipe over time.

Everything depends on the outlet. The pipe has to fall steadily to a lower spot: a ditch, the street, a dry well or the back of the lot. A drain with no low point to empty into just fills up and stays full.

What happens when a French drain goes in?

  1. Plan the route: The crew finds the wet area and a lower outlet, checks the fall between them, and calls Georgia 811 so buried lines are marked at least 3 business days ahead.
  2. Dig the trench: A trencher or small excavator cuts the trench, sloping it toward the outlet.
  3. Fabric, gravel and pipe: Fabric lines the trench, gravel goes in, the perforated pipe is set, and more gravel covers it.
  4. Close it up: The fabric wraps over the top, and soil and sod or a gravel strip finish the surface.

Are there rules about where the water can go?

Water you drain away should not be dumped onto a neighbor's property. Georgia also keeps a 25-foot buffer along the banks of state waters, so digging right up to a creek bank is a different job with its own rules.

In Whitfield County, work within 200 feet of a year-round stream can need a land-disturbance permit even when it is under an acre. Tell the crew if a creek runs near your yard.

How much does a French drain cost around Dalton?

As a rough guide for 2026, HomeGuide's national figures put French drains at $10 to $35 a linear foot, or about $500 to $8,800 installed. Depth, the length of the run to the outlet, rock in the way, and restoring the lawn or landscaping set the price.

Get the length, depth, pipe type and outlet written into the quote, so you can compare quotes fairly.

Common questions

Can I install a French drain myself?

A short, shallow run is a common weekend project if you have a clear downhill outlet. Call Georgia 811 at least 3 business days before digging, use filter fabric, and check the fall with a level. Long runs, deep trenches or rock are where a crew with a trencher saves time.

How long does a French drain last?

Many years when it has filter fabric and a good outlet. Clogging usually comes from fine soil getting into the gravel or roots finding the pipe.

Can a French drain go next to the foundation?

Yes. Drains along a foundation or a wall are common. They still need a downhill outlet away from the house.

French drain or regrading?

Grade first if the ground slopes toward the house. Add a drain where water needs to be carried out of a low spot that grading cannot fix.
